Free Games Which are Actually Fun
With the Internets glorious expansion over the last decade, games have come and went. With the increasing inflation and development costs of triple-A titles, many new titles cost fifty dollars or more. Yet, it does not mean you can’t have fun on the cheap. It is easier than ever to spend hours gaming without having to pay a dime. Thus, today we’re going to go over a couple of free games which we have spent hundreds of hours playing and are still not sick of.
Warframe
Do you like space? Do you like ninjas? If the answers are yes, then try Warframe. It has been one of our favorite free games since its release in 2013. Warframe was released to a lukewarm reception but has constant and timely updates. The updates improved graphics and mechanics serving an ever-improving and expanding story. The game revolves around shooting and slashing never-ending hordes of enemies. Your suits called Warframes, each have their own unique and differing abilities. The game can become repetitive if you do not enjoy grinding to farm necessary items. The game’s progression system involves crafting and leveling up items to raise your “mastery rank”. To unlock new items, it can take hours to reach the “mastery rank” necessary to unlock the weapons you want. The solid online cooperative play is made better by one of the least toxic communities I have ever seen. It is definitely an enjoyable experience.
The great thing about the game is there is no pay to win microtransactions. In fact, every weapon and Warframe can be obtained through gameplay. Some items are difficult to get in the early game. Warframe veterans find themselves grinding certain items requisite for some crafting recipes. The early game can feel slow and difficult due to the inaccessibility of some items until late game. This is why it is advisable that you do buy a little of their in-game currency “platinum”. If you opt to do so, wait until they offer you a 75% off discount as a daily login reward to get the most for the least. Using the funds, you can get what you want to play with early in the game. There are many tier lists online about which weapons and Warframes people like using or consider to be the best. Yet, aside from a couple of specific exceptions, they are all good in their own ways. It is all a matter of finding the one that meets your play style the best.
Stepmania
Think Dance Dance Revolution on a keyboard. With a free download for the launcher and many song packs available for free online, there are hours of fun to be had. In the game, you tap away to songs and try not to miss the notes. Because of how it is music based, as long as you enjoy the songs, it is an enjoyable experience. Yet, it is so lightweight that it will run on old laptops. Currently, it appears the website is down. But, with a little searching, I found the launcher here. The only downside to this game is that it is quite old. Unfortunately, the community creating new song packs is shrinking by the day. What is there though already is still more than enough to put hours into. It is definitely one of my favorite free games of all time.
